Sharon’s book has given me wonderful tools to truly ‘be’ with my children. The stories, meditations and activities in ‘Connecting Kids’ allow my kids and I to engage with each other in a fun, playful and honest way. The meditations are wonderful with calming my kids and if I want to relax myself, I just put the meditation CD on. My children are able to learn from the characters in the book how to connect to their own inner voice, how to feel safe and trust themselves (their super hero) but most of all that it is o.k. and important to express all their feelings. I have a 30 year history of teaching young children and being closely involved with their parents.

What a need there is out there for a book that will touch a parent’s heart and help them to work on emotional issues with both themselves and their children in such an easy way. Sharon has taken some difficult subjects and handled them so gracefully. This book will inspire parents and help them integrate the tools so easily into normal, busy, everyday lives!

One story really touched me and I have wished that I could have read this book 30 years ago when I was bringing up my own 3 children. It would have answered some questions for me and inspired me in my years of heavy-slog child rearing!!

The story was about a time when Sharon experienced a heartbreak and she explained to her daughter how she was feeling and that there would be times when she would see her mum crying. Sharon let her know that this was alright and that she did not need to worry about her, but understand that it would be a slow process for her heart to heal. She then explained that when her daughter saw her at these times, she would  just go on about her business, although they would often share a hug afterwards.

How empowering is this one story alone. A child does not have to feel guilt at the sight of their parents anguish and yet how natural are these outpourings at times like this.

There are many more stories and meditations that are easy to use with your children and these will encourage them with processes that will assist them throughout the years. In the healing centre that I run, we see many adults who have not been given the tools we all need to cope with the stresses we all feel in our lives at certain times. I highly recommend this book.

I have been using “Connecting Kids” in Journey Classes with year 4/5′s and they have been so good.
The kids have really enjoyed the stories and the meditation, particularly the one on Self Esteem. One little boy, aged 9, told his mum that he could really relate to Ben’s story and that hearing it, helped him to deal with his own problems and he was really looking forward to the secondlesson that morning. I had asked the children to draw pictures of how they felt during the meditation with the Lion and one little boy drew himself as a weight lifter, holding the weights far above his head, because the
meditation allowed him to feel so strong!
I find it very useful to have different stories and meditations for different themes. Tomorrow I’m going to use the meditation on Stillness as part of my lesson on Stillness and getting the best out of yourself.
